More About Inglewood, California

ntly founded by European and Spanish settlers, Inglewood, California, is a place that has been influenced by many different cultures and peoples. Aside from the prior groups mentioned, Inglewood has been shaped heavily by its African-American community. Latinos and African-Americans make up a the majority demographic within the city; the Latino population replaced African-Americans in the majority in the new millennium.

Inglewood is located in Southern California, about 20 miles northwest of Long Beach, California, and 12 miles southwest of Los Angeles, California. The city falls in the Pacific Standard Time zone and is 9 square-miles in area. On average, the city's hottest month is July, its coldest month is January, and its wettest month is March.

The city is considered to be a suburb of Los Angeles; however, Inglewood has carved out a place in culture that sets it apart from the larger, better-known Los Angeles satellite cities. Many influential African-American artists have ties to the Inglewood area. Before his death, rapper Tupac Shakur immortalized the city in the popular song "California Love." Film director John Singleton — the youngest Africa-American to ever be nominated for a best-director Oscar — filmed parts of his classic movie "Boyz n the Hood" in and around the Inglewood area.

Inglewood is divided into three distinct neighborhoods. The Crenshaw-Imperial district is the primary area that serves as a center for shopping and entertainment; Morningside Park is home to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); and North Inglewood is undergoing a renaissance, to some degree, as the art-set has began to discover the neighborhood.

Because of its proximity to Los Angeles International Airport, accommodations are plentiful for the traveler.
